At the state and local level in 2021, more than 389 bills were introduced across the nation that would enact restrictive voting measures, resulting in widespread suppression, particularly for Black voters, older voters, and those with disabilities.\u00a0

The struggle for voting rights was a cornerstone of the Civil Rights Movement. In American democracy, voting represents the autonomy to choose our elected officials, have a voice in decision-making, and participate fully in civic life. It is not a luxury. We can't squander that legacy now.

That's why Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s family has declared: No celebration without legislation!\u00a0

We must renew our federal protections and ensure that voting, and our democracy, is safeguarded for generations to come.

There are just a few Senators that are holding up this urgent action to pass the Freedom to Vote Act (preceded by the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and the For the People Act, which both have stalled). The Freedom to Vote Act includes expanded registration and voting opportunities, broadens types of voter ID, bans partisan gerrymandering, secures elections, and requires more transparency around campaign spending.

Adjusting the filibuster to allow for voting protections to clear, and is not only appropriate, it is what is just and necessary.

Not to mention, it's popular too! Michigan passed these critical changes in 2018 with over 60% of the electorate voting in favor.

We have just reached a full year since a criminal-legal reform package of 12 bipartisan bills were introduced. Since then, they have languished in the Senate Committee on Judiciary and Public Safety.

When Patrick Lyoya was murdered by Grand Rapids Police, these bills got a lot of attention. Unfortunately, the \"reforms\" are mixed. While a couple are good and represent steps in the right direction, the rest are bad or downright unhelpful to achieving the kind of institutional overhaul needed to create true public safety.

Our conversations in communities across the state have made it clear what we really need: divestment from a system that wreaks havoc and violence on Black communities and decreased police power.

Another critical flaw is reliance of the administration of Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES). While creating protocols to hold police accountable are important, this work should be overseen by community members who have been most impacted by police harm. Creating a community-based agency to do this work or revising the membership bylaws of MCOLES so that a overwhelming majority of seats are not filled by those in law enforcement would be most appropriate.\n\nFinally, let SB 483 go. Further study on why police recruitment is low is unnecessary. We know why police staffing is harder than ever: the public sees the disconnect between \"protect and serve\" and the reality that police violence is still violence in our communities. \n\nIt is critical to move on transformative change for our criminal-legal system. The 2020 election was a historic one here in Michigan, and not just in the ways you might imagine... despite COVID-19, Michiganders were given access to the ballot in a number of new ways following our passage of a 2018 ballot initiative of voting expansions.

We know that giving voters more options is critical to ensuring that everyone has a chance to participate in our democracy.\u00a0

Making elections more accessible invites everyone into the process, including communities of color that have long been disenfranchised and cut off from participating. That's why we must pass the 'For the People Act.'

The 'For the People Act' would\u00a0expand voter registration to create opportunities for automatic and same-day registration, increase voter access to utilize vote-by-mail and early voting, as well as limit excuses to purge voter rolls. In addition, it would require states to establish independent redistricting commissions for congressional lines that are not controlled by politicians.

Let's send a strong signal to those looking to weaken our democracy across the country: we won't allow voting access to be further degraded. Federal action will help us preserve our multiracial democracy for generations to come.

Between our approval of voting expansions in 2018 and historic turnout in 2020 despite a pandemic, Michigan voters have been clear:\u00a0we want to make participation in our democracy easier, not harder!\u00a0

Voter suppression tactics, like the ones found in the package of 39 bills introduced in March, have been used to disenfranchise and exclude Black people and other people of color from participating fully in electoral processes time and time again. They do this by making it more difficult to cast your ballot. These bills would enforce restrictive voter ID requirements, limit the use of ballot drop boxes, ban local clerks from affixing prepaid postage to ballots (so you don't have to!), and introduce other new hurdles.

While these bills sit in consideration in the Michigan House Committee on Elections, we want to make sure our state senators know that this is not the kind of \"election reform\" Michigan deserves. In fact, there are other options. The Michigan Secretary of State has a released a slate of reforms that would build on bipartisan reforms enacted in 2018, making the absentee ballot process less confusing and easier to ensure your vote is counted.

Join us in telling your legislator that banning CRT and the 1619 Project won't stop racism in our school districts.

All across the country, legislation that is designed to maintain white supremacy is metastasizing in response to Black political power that has been evident since the uprising after George Floyd's death and long before.

Right now, our schools are under attack.

Some Michigan senators are following in the footsteps of other legislatures by attempting to prohibit lessons on or related to critical race theory, the 1619 project, or anything on their list of\u00a0\"anti-American and racist theories\" in school districts.\u00a0In trying to ban these conversations, they are demonstrating perfectly how systemic racism works.

For example, under this policy, the assertion that the United States Constitution is fundamentally steeped in racism, would be censored. How will our history teachers explain that this founding document enshrined slavery? It may not mention the actual word \"slave,\" but it's referred to in three different places (Article I, Sec 2; Article 1, Sec 9; Article IV, Sec 2).

This law would go as far as to defund schools (seriously, they want to withhold 5% of due funds in a given year for violators)\u00a0\u00a0that are committed to teaching that tells the truth about systemic racism.\u00a0

In addition, Michigan Representatives are pushing their own attempt to sweep conversations about systemic racism under the rug. They would redefine the meaning of race and gender stereotyping in order to weaponize it against teachers and students. Under their verbiage, content around socialization (how our beliefs, values, and preconceptions-- including those about racial hierarchy-- are shaped), repair and healing (that in the present-day, our nation bears responsibility to correct ongoing harm and impact caused by historical wrongdoing), and more would be banned.\u00a0

It is clear that backlash against critical race theory (CRT) is grounded in ignorance and a desire to maintain power. CRT is an academic framework developed by Black scholars that examines race and systemic racism. It recognizes the ways white supremacy and racism are woven into the fabric of American society, systems, institutions, and policy (e.g. criminal legal system, education, etc.). It recognizes that race is not biologically real\u2014that it is a social construct used to create human hierarchy. And, it affirms that racism is real, not delusional, and centers stories and experiences of Black, Indigenous, and people of color.

We need to keep the conversation going not shut it down. We need curriculum that encompasses true history and values shared humanity. This necessarily includes education about systemic racism and the need to address it to create an equitable society.

Let's tell our legislators: CRT and the 1619 Project are not the issue. Racism in our schools is. This legislation is absurd and dangerous.

Passed back in March, the American Rescue Plan Act creates a stream of funding for our local communities to recover from COVID-19. There is A LOT of money on the table. Michigan alone will be receiving $10.3 billion between transfers to the state government, our counties, and our cities.

Budgets evidence what we value. It's critical that we use this long-overdue infusion of dollars to put us on the road towards an equitable future-- one where the conditions that allowed COVID-19 to wreak havoc disproportionately on Black communities no longer exists.

In 2018, Michigan voters made history by overwhelmingly supporting a proposal to create an independent citizens redistricting commission to take the power of drawing voting districts out of politicians' hands and creating a separate, nonpartisan body to create the maps instead. This was supposed to ensure fair, equitable voting district for generations to come.

Nevertheless, as the Michigan Independent Citizen's Redistricting Commission's (MICRC) work is underway, we know that\u00a0our voting districts will still be marred by systemic racism.

Why is that? One reason is prison gerrymandering.

Mass incarceration and the prison industrial complex make certain that Black communities are over-surveilled, over-policed, and over-incarcerated, resulting in disproportionate representation in the criminal legal system and immense violence.\u00a0

People who are incarcerated are counted by the Census as living in the place where they are held, regardless of how long their sentence actually is. This means that whiter, more rural counties' populations\u2014 where these punitive facilities are most often constructed\u2014are artificially inflated.

Moreover, because of this, Black communities receive less state and federal funding than they are due AND they receive distorted representation in the halls of government.

As we support policies that re-envision the way we handle harm, moving away from punitive practices towards community-based, proactive responses,\u00a0let's restore political power where it belongs.

It's back-to-school season! And while the Biden Administration extended the student loan payment moratorium until January 2022, more action is needed to stop student debt from continuing to disproportionately burden Black borrowers.

In the United States, the price tag of outstanding student loans is $1.7 trillion and growing. Black women, in particular, hold the greatest proportion of this debt.

Systemic racism woven throughout economic policies has historically and presently blocked Black families from building wealth. This has lead to Black students needing to borrow at higher rates to finance further education. It doesn't stop there, though. Because of workplace racism, higher interest payments, and lower wages, Black borrowers are also more likely to default, leading to lower credit scores, which can impact the ability to get a credit card, receive a mortgage, and more.

It is a vicious cycle. The disparity in student loan debt between Black and white students is both caused by and is increasing the racial wealth gap, and in fact, student loans are becoming a larger and larger share of the gap itself.

Despite knowing that this injustice is only worsening, the federal government has declined to deliver meaningful relief.\u00a0

Reparations are needed to create true economic justice in the United States, and cancelling student loan debt now can be a step towards a fuller, more robust commitment to eliminating and healing the generational impacts of white supremacy.

Take this opportunity to advance the intersections of racial and climate justice during the budget reconciliation\u00a0process!

In 2021, the Red, Black, & Green New Deal (RBGND) initiative launched to ensure that the world knows that: Climate Justice is Racial Justice.

At The Movement for Black Lives, we believe all Black people have the right to determine our own futures; where we can earn a decent living, purchase a home, raise a family and live in a safe community with access to reliable, clean and affordable services. We should be able to add our voice to the problems and solutions that impact our family and our community\u2019s well being. We should be able to build a future around the things that are important to us, leaving a legacy of generational and cultural value for those that come after us.

This mandate recognizes that climate change is real and that is has a disproportionate impact on Black lives, between weathering more extreme weather events, living in areas facing corporate pollution, benefiting the least from climate abusers, and surviving the compounding effects of systemic racism. Therefore, climate policy must take bold stances to protect Black livelihoods and ensure a green future for Black children and families.

The ongoing budget reconciliation process at the federal level is a chance to advance this agenda! A budget reconciliation bill differs from a normal bill because it specifically focuses on decisions about how we spend and make money as a nation. An important distinction is also that it requires fewer votes to pass, making it easier to realize than other policies that are getting caught up because they will not pass the filibuster.\u00a0

The current budget reconciliation bill includes targets and objectives related to climate because they are tied to certain money-making streams, like fines on corporate polluters. That means, we should uplift the RBGND right now!

A year ago on September 29, the Movement for Black Lives unveiled new tools, art, and resources to bring the BREATHE Act to life nationwide in order to create a future where Black people can thrive.

As the holidays draw nearer, so does Reparations Monday. Created by the Movement for Black Lives, this day drives giving to Black-led organizations that are often left behind in the frenzy of Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, and Giving Tuesday, which results in the bulk of donations going to the most well-known and well-resourced nonprofits.

To realize Black liberation, investments at the enormous scale of racial injustice will be required. This also must include repair for intergenerational racial harm, like the enslavement of people of African descent, redlining and segregation, mass incarceration, and more.

Reparations are about accounting for this violence. To determine what proposals for reparations would need to include, above and beyond financial compensation, we must direct our collective attention towards understanding the scope of the harm.\u00a0

That's why H.R. 40, an act to establish a Commission to Study and Develop Reparation Proposals for African Americans Act, has been introduced every single year since 1989. This kind of truth-telling about white supremacy has been long overdue.

Just within the last few weeks, the 2021 International Tribunal on Human Rights Abuses Against Black, Brown and Indigenous Peoples indicted the United States for genocide. In addition, with 80% in support, Detroit passed its own ballot proposal to establish a task force that would recommend actions to address the deleterious impacts racism has inflicted on Black residents in the city. The federal government cannot continue to put off this responsibility.

H.R. 40\u2014 for the first time in history\u2014 saw movement this past year and has advanced to the full House of Representatives for another vote.\u00a0

That's why for Reparations Monday, we want you to push out this action designed to move our Congressmembers to action on this critical legislation. We cannot wait any longer. As Martin Luther King Jr. put it in his Letter from Birmingham Jail,\u00a0\"Justice too long delayed is justice denied.\"

To Black Elected, Appointed and Positional Leaders:

Accountability is an act of love. Of all 13 Black Lives Matter guiding principles, the one BLM Lansing chose to elevate as our chief guiding principle is Loving Engagement. It is out of our love for ourselves, our people, and our community that we are calling in Black leaders who sit at tables of white supremacy, justifying to yourselves that you have more wisdom, experience, and expertise than those of us in the streets and in our neighborhoods where the pain and trauma are real and visceral.

We understand that you believe in cooperation and see compromise as progress. We disagree. We did not ask or give our consent for you to speak for us any more than we assert that we speak for you. We are the people who don\u2019t get invited to tables of white supremacy because we know it is our duty to disrupt transgenerational cycles of trauma and harm. Demanding accountability and results is not an unrealistic expectation; it is what we are owed by elected officials and institutional leaders in whom power is vested by the people.

Perhaps it is because our paths as people building power do not often cross with those of you who take power for granted that we find ourselves at a crossroads. Learning to hear those with lived experiences creates a better and richer understanding of everyday Black people\u2019s problems. Understanding that those closest to the problem are often most relative to the solution. All so-called Black leaders must learn to listen to the people.

Are you aware that Black Lives Matter called for Andy Schor to resign because of well-documented and publicized harms to Black people? How can you sit at a table he created to silence and discredit those who have made our demands clear and expect us to remain silent? We have been patient, and we have made our concerns known in private conversations out of respect for you. The truth is that you are complicit in the oppression of Black people who are evident in our demand to defund the police and build a community safety system that is accountable to the people.

Twisting our demands into reforms that increase police funding and reinforce power and oppressive systems is a disservice to the Black community. Allowing white leaders to divide us as a community is a choice. The side you chose places you on the wrong side of history in a time of global uprising and the long-overdue reckoning of white supremacy. You have chosen to side with maintaining racial hierarchy and your actions have real consequences for people fighting for justice, for their loved ones and their livelihoods. Have you spoken to any of the nine individuals who have filed racial discrimination lawsuits? If not, is it because you signed a deal with the City of Lansing that binds you to their will and requires you to protect their interests over those who have been harmed? Are you beginning to understand the harm you are causing?

As long as there are Black leaders who are willing to lend their credibility and respectability to cover racial discrimination, there will be no accountability. Without accountability, there is no transformation; only public relations and political posturing. New programs will be created, and your organizations, friends, and children will get opportunities that others will never know existed. Literally on the backs of those who have been in city council every week for the past year, in addition to being in the streets risking our lives fighting for those whose needs will continue to go unmet. What would you do if you were in our shoes? What is your duty as a Black leader? Where is your accountability to those you claim to represent?

We invite you to come to the community table and give an account to begin healing and building across experiential, economic, and generational divides. We know that you too experience micro and macro aggressions because of your proximity to whiteness. We know what it means to have our value determined by our willingness to nod, smile, and go along to get along. We are calling you home. Our ancestors sacrificed much and fought hard for us to make \u201cgood trouble.\u201d It\u2019s time for you to join the fight for Black liberation and stop working to undermine a global movement.

Acknowledge the harm perpetrated by Andy Schor and his administration.
Publicly state that you do not agree or align with the values of white supremacy and tactics that undermine accountability.
Divest from work with and support of Schor\u2019s administration.

This call-to-action was created by Freedom Summer youth as a part of their #WhyThemShoes art installation and social media campaign to raise awareness about gun violence and the need for community-driven solutions.

Gun violence is gun-related crime that is also a human rights concern. In America, more than 1,220 people have died due to gun-related incidents.\u00a0According to the University of Michigan's School of Public Health, \"firearms are the second leading cause of death among U.S. children and adolescent.\"\u00a0Gun Violence is a worldwide epidemic that we should all take serious.

Moreover, police are often the ones perpetuating gun violence.\u00a0Every year police in America shoot and kill more than 1,000 people and Black Americans make up 30% of the deaths. That means Black Americans are almost 3 times more likely to be shot and killed by police than white Americans. In addition, 98.3% of killings by police from 2013-2020 have not resulted in the officers being charged with a crime.

That's why we must fund the community (not police) to end gun violence!

The Michigan BREATHE Act is inspired by the The BREATHE Act federal legislation project of The Movement for Black Lives. This state-wide bill will be organized into four sections:

REBUILD real public safety with community at the center...The Michigan BREATHE Act is legislation, created with the people for the people, to address root causes of violence and crime and protect those who need care in crisis.
RECLAIM public systems to produce just and equitable results...The Michigan BREATHE Act creates new policies across law, education, health, environment, and the economy that reduce harm and create opportunity for all.

What is a co-sponsor?\u00a0Signing on as a co-sponsor simply means that you're willing to put your name on this effort, that you are a community member that supports the vision of BREATHE here in Lansing. Your support at this stage can take shape in many different ways: (1) educating yourself and others on BREATHE; (2) attending and inviting new people to join Lansing Peoples Assemblies where we are building collective power for a local version of this legislation, a People's Budget, and the leadership capacity to make it happen; (3) regularly engaging in conversations with neighbors, friends, and family to move people to support BREATHE; (4) asking organizations and other people to sign-on as co-sponsors; (5) engaging in municipal meetings, boards, commissions, public comment periods, etc. to elevate the vision of BREATHE; (6) taking action opportunities that will be forthcoming, such as Teach-Ins, phonebanks, canvassing and more!

What is a local version of BREATHE?\u00a0We don't have to wait for a federal or Michigan BREATHE Act to get started on making its vision a reality in Lansing. The federal package represents a radical reimagining of public safety, community care, and how we spend money as a society. It bring 4 simple ideas to the table:

Divest federal resources from incarceration and policing.
Invest in new, non-punitive, non-carceral approaches to community safety that lead states to shrink their criminal-legal systems and center the protection of Black lives\u2014including Black mothers, Black trans people, and Black women.
Allocate new money to build healthy, sustainable, and equitable communities.
Hold political leaders to their promises and enhance the self-determination of all Black communities.

Our local version will do the same. Though, decision-making authority and power look a bit different at the city level, local governments have often been referred to as \"laboratories of democracy\" for their ability to design and pass innovative, transformative policy. It's time to invest in what works (community!) instead of pouring resources into what doesn't (our current criminal-legal system), and we believe we can get it done.\u00a0
